Herceg Landfill is located in the southwestern portion of Bushkill Township and was in operation from the 1950s-80s. The facility closed with the onset and enforcement of State and Federal environmental regulations in the mid-1980s. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been monitoring this site quarterly since 1997 in an effort to detect potential groundwater pollution issues and to protect local residents. Bushkill Township does not and cannot regulate this landfill with respect to environmental issues and concerns; such regulation is solely the jurisdiction of the State and Federal governments. The Township does, however, support the efforts of DEP and the funding programs which support the monitoring and remediation efforts for all landfills across the Commonwealth. During the Board of Supervisors meeting on June 19, 2007, the Supervisors voted to submit letters of support to our local State Representatives, urging them to continue the financial support for the DEP programs.
